The pity I would teach my students must be clinical and unsparing. Not like Desdemonaâs pity for Othello, born of sympathy and erotic fascination. No, my pity would come from a close analysis of Catherâs limits and vulnerabilities: of temperament and experience, of family and cultural history. I could pity Cather because for all her intelligence she could not free herself of these primal race needs and consolations. Rooted not just in history, but in her aesthetic and erotic core.
You can see that my pity had its vengeful core. How the proud, ardently self-made Cather would have loathed being its object! Aesthetics and erosâmerging, diverging, wringing and twisting us every which way! Here my pity could even have an undertone of empathy. More emotional range would give me more power.
